The host of the Daily Show, Trevor Noah, triggered an angry social media reaction from many people especially Pakistani’s after satirically comparing the new prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan with Donald Trump.
This week, South African comedian Noah commented on US television late-night show that the Pakistani cricket legend has plenty in common with the US president.
“The more you look, the more you realize that these similarities have spread throughout their life,” said Noah. “When Trump advertised Pizza Hut, Khan was in Pepsi advertisements. In the tabloids, Trump had three weddings, as did Khan.”
“Trump thinks Islam is bad, Khan lives in Islamabad – I should have stopped while I was ahead but the rhythm kept me going,” Noah added to his live studio audience’s laughter.
“In fact, these guys are so alike that shortly before he was elected, Khan was also embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal. And just like Trump, he got through it.”
Noah is known for talking about global politics, and when it comes to sport, he doesn’t shy away. Last month, he created controversy by joking that after France lifted the trophy at Russia 2018, “Africa won the World Cup.”
He certainly isn’t bashful when it comes to criticizing Trump either, and the video comparing the former reality television star to the new leader of Pakistan has gone viral on social media. Noah’s argument also had a severe component.
Noah also used TV clips to demonstrate his point, including an old Khan interview segment talking about his bedroom, mostly gold-colored in design.
“Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Tell me that’s not the Pakistani Trump Tower,” Noah joked at his former New York penthouse, referring to Trump’s own penchant for golden furniture.
“Look, I’m not saying Imran Khan is the brown Trump,” Noah added. “Imran Khan is one of many leaders around the world following the successful format of the hit show called ‘The Trump Presidency’, including apparently using the same writers.”
Noah then showed Trump and Khan videos on the campaign path railing against crooked politicians and bragged about their individual achievement and notoriety before they became leaders.
“I don’t know if Prime Minister Khan will turn out like President Trump, but if you were moving to Pakistan to escape Trump, you might want to pick someplace else,” Noah stated at the end of the episode.
Former cricket captain Khan is honored as an icon for his pitch feats, including guiding his nation to the glory of the World Cup in 1992. Khan scored 3,807 runs and took 362 wickets in 88 tests, and the criticism of Noah in Pakistan did not go down well.
“Very poor taste,” one Pakistani individual wrote on Twitter in response to a tweet from the formal account of The Daily Show.
“Khan is the only hope left for that country! He is not impulsive, immature or a liar. Your team worked really hard on the clips but they painted a picture far from reality.”
Another Twitter user wrote: “Being a Pakistani American I took a great deal of offense by you comparing Imran Khan to Trump.
“Expected better. Imran is larger than life and has some serious accomplishments for humanity in large, cancer hospitals, free educational institutions to name [a] few. I doubt Trump has done well for any human being on earth.”
The Daily Show account tweet also spoke of Khan’s “self-enhancing wealth exhibits” and “hardline nationalism.”
In a haunting declaration to his crowd, Noah defended himself after his joke about the France World Cup football squad drew powerful criticism from French supporters as well as the French Ambassador to the United States.
But the comedian still has to comment on the controversy that his remarks on Khan stirred up in Pakistan.
“I’m a big fan of your comedy show, but you’ve made an uninformed and unrealistic remark about Imran Khan,” said a user of Twitter. “He’s nowhere close or like Trump … Do your studies.” “It was plain dumb to compare Trump with Imran Khan,” said another.
