IA-03: View of the Fallon-Boswell race from the ground

First, I want to thank Matt and Chris for posting regularly on the Democratic primary in Iowa's third Congressional district, and especially for creating this Act Blue page to raise money for Ed Fallon. As of now the Open Left Act Blue page has raised $5,585 from 78 donors. I also appreciate that Blue America added Fallon to their Act Blue page. Since Tuesday I've received four anti-Fallon direct-mail pieces, as well as one mailer featuring Al Gore's endorsement of Congressman Leonard Boswell

Okay, folks, here it is, stage two in the process of collecting and selecting the best ideas of the week, chosing one person's comment or even just the germ of an idea for them to expand into a frontpage diary next week. The rules are simple: read all the entries, and vote! Now, I'm going to do my best to set this up as a multi-vote poll and hope that it works out so I can determine an actual winner. It's been eons since I did anything like this, so cross your fingers and jump in! Or better

Obama Leaves Trinity Church

Surprise surprise, mixing religion and politics does not always work out in the most awesome manner. "We don't want to have to answer for everything that's stated in the church," the Democratic front-runner said. "We also don't want the church subjected to the scrutiny that a presidential campaign legitimately undergoes." I saw the charismatic Cliff Schechter speak on Friday about his book, The Real John McCain, and he pointed out that McCain has actually changed his religion with limited noti

Clinton Supporter’s Bigotry Comes Out Of The Closet

If you want to know why I've lost respect for Bill and his wife after South Carolina, this following clip is why. Your campaign injected race into this campaign when Barack started whipping Hillary's behind, and here is an example of the ugly aftermath of it blowing up at today's DNC Rules Committee hearing in DC. Superdelgates, time to end this crap now. W.E.B. DuBois said it over a century ago, and I fear this quote is coming true in my lifetime. 'Either the United States will destroy ig

Once again, Lance Mannion nails it: Obama managed to create the perception in the Media that he had already won the nomination long before he was even close to winning the nomination and that Clinton in continuing to campaign as if she still had a chance was being a vindictive and egomaniacal spoilsport. With the help of a Clinton-hating Press Corps, he was able to scare Party leaders into thinking that letting the campaign go on was destroying the party and somehow thwarting the will of the peo

Government Spending for Abstinence Education?

Government Spending for Abstinence Education? May 31st, 2008 at 9:45 pm The Washington Post reports that the National Abstinence Education Association is campaigning to elect officials who will spend government money on abstinence education. The first time I read the first paragraph, it almost sounded like abstinence was a “controversial approach”: Proponents of sex education programs that focus on encouraging abstinence are launching a nationwide campaign aimed at enlisting 1 million paren

There is no way I would have wanted to be a part of the DNC Rules Committee today. They had the unenviable task of deciding what to do with the Florida & Michigan primaries and their delegates. I posted my opinion on this controversy back in February. To recap, Florida & Michigan moved their primaries so that they mattered, the DNC tried to bully them into moving back to their proper place in line… the didn’t so the DNC took their delegates away. Exactly 1, 487 Democratic Presidential

Bear with me, folks, while I gush for a few more days. I swear, I'll get back to yapping about spiders and farmer's markets, in due time. So. The Homecoming Motorcade. Did I say I was grateful? You stood on the streets in Pesotum, IL. Firetrucks, squad cars, and "townfolk" line the streets of Tolono, IL. Flags hung from firetrucks also, as the Savoy community lined up. And finally, you waved your arms and your flags at Brian & Steven from our own hometown, standing at main intersections in

Deobandis again condemn “terrorism,” but leading cleric explains that jihad and terrorism are not synonymous

"He said that while terrorism is destructive, jehad is constructive." Much will be made of this declaration in the mainstream media, as was the case with the last one. Still, it contains the same inherent flaws that even the reporter notices in the article below (in spite of the headline calling it a "first"): The treatment of "terrorism" and "jihad" as separate concepts, and the equivocation afforded by adjectives such as "unjust" and "innocent," where again, the clerics rely on many readers'

Ingrid Michaelson

Remember the Old Navy sweater campaign last fall with that uber-catchy song "The Way I Am", but you couldn't name the artist? Her name is Ingrid Michaelson and she is kicking off her first headlining tour this Sunday (June 1) in Philly at the TLA. Discovered on Myspace, featured in Grey's Anatomy and catapulted into the charts with said Old Navy commerical, Ingrid has performed on major talk shows, like Leno, Conan, Regis & Kelly, and Good Morning America. She has been invited to major festival
